The Interview

When did you start podcasting, and what prompted you to start?

I started in 2013 because raising a strong-willed child or a child on the spectrum is so hard!

What’s one episode of the Calm Parenting Podcast you recommend for new listeners to start with and why?

Just listen to the latest one. And then binge if you wish!

Do you have a favorite episode or moment? Why is it your favorite?

In just about every episode, I gain some unique insight in the middle of talking that I think can actually transform a broken relationship. That keeps it fresh and exciting for me.

Are there any episodes of the Calm Parenting Podcast that took a surprising turn or taught you something new?

Almost every episode. Some catch me off guard when I get emotional and can “feel” what the strong-willed child is feeling. I am able to convey that to frustrated parents for a greater understanding of their child’s heart and motives.

If you could interview anyone, living or dead, on your podcast, who would it be and why?

Dostoevsky. He had such unique insight into human nature and lived at the turn of the 19th century when so much was changing. I’d love to tap into his insight. And also berate him for writing such annoyingly long monologues ūüôā

Do you have any funny or unexpected behind-the-scenes stories to share?

Not any I can share! In the early days, I tried to make everything perfect. Now, I just record with no editing, except for swear words at the beginning of episodes when I mess up badly.

What do you wish you had known before you started the Calm Parenting Podcast?

It’s not about the right microphone or studio setup; it’s about content and authenticity. I focus on what’s most important to parents with the cheapest setup ever.

Aside from podcasting, what are some of your other interests or hobbies?

We just moved to the mountains to live closer to our son (and future grandchildren?). Hiking is a daily experience, and I read a lot.

Can you give us a sneak peek into any upcoming episodes of the Calm Parenting Podcast?

I’m becoming more confident and addressing more controversial topics head-on. We have an episode on spanking coming up.

Do you have any download/subscription statistics you are willing to share?

We’re fortunate to have 150,000 downloads per month.

Which brand and/or type of microphone do you use and why?

I use the old Apple earbuds they don’t make anymore.

Do you also enjoy listening to podcasts? If so, what is your favorite?

Yes, I love podcasts! I rotate between Andrew Huberman, Lex Fridman, and Joe Rogan, plus some on stolen artwork mysteries.

How do you promote the Calm Parenting Podcast?

We rely on parents spreading the word to other parents. We also link to our podcast on Instagram and Facebook.

Have you ever had to deal with negative feedback or trolls? How did you handle it?

Not often. Most people who are upset are experiencing pain in their lives. I handle disagreements with mercy and compassion.

Have you monetized the Calm Parenting Podcast? If so, what strategies have you found to be most effective?

We have been fortunate to have advertisers who recognize that we’ve built a trusting relationship with many Moms and Dads.
